Transportation

Welcome to St. Maarten! You’ll most likely begin your trip at Princess Juliana International Airport (PJIA), also known as SXM Airport. PIJA accepts flights from most major carriers from all across the globe, making it the easiest way to access the island. If you’re flying in from within the French Caribbean or visiting us by cruise, check out our Getting Here page to learn all you need to know about the different entry points.

Getting Around St. Maarten

On St. Maarten, exploring every corner of the island on your own can easily be done with a car rental. Whether you are driving past our Border Monument into another country, St. Martin, or simply visiting our many beaches, explore the island your way and embark on new adventures. Choose your vehicle of choice at any of the established car rental companies around the island, or conveniently located near the Princess Juliana International Airport.

Maybe you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous. Scooters are a unique way to see the sights, and they can make island traffic a bit more manageable for experienced riders. Visitors can rent a scooter near the airport, or in Philipsburg.

Looking for more experience and knowledge at the wheel? Book a taxi service to chauffeur you around the island. Our friendly taxi drivers are ready to give you first-class service, and local knowledge of the best spots! No one knows St. Maarten better than they do. Major Taxi dispatchers and taxi lines are lined up by Princess Juliana International Airport, near The Courthouse in Philipsburg, and at the head of town on Front Street in Philipsburg. You can call up your own taxi by dialing the hotline 9247

Though the island does not have a public transportation system, the island is composed of privately-owned bus routes to many of the popular cities, including Philipsburg, Maho, Marigot, and more. Buses are marked with a B license plate. Fares range from $1.50 to $2.00 depending on your destination’s distance.
