I recently returned from St Maarten-St Martin, and had a wonderful vacation. The Sonesta Maho Beach Resort was a great pick for me. There was endless activities on the island. The taxi rides were especilly enjoyable as each taxi driver had a piece of history to share with us. Sonesta Maho has a sister resort in the downtown area that we were able to enjoy lunch at no cost. The actual hotel was great, clean, stocked daily with beverages of your choice and large bottles of alcohol for you to enjoy. The food was great, something for everyone. The staff could not have been more attentive, they responded to every need one might have. The Sonesta Maho Beach Resort made us feel as if we were home, and very welcomed.
Very busy hotel. All inclusive resort with mainly American tourists as guests. Some floors are renovated, some are not. Renovated rooms are modern and fairly clean. Could do with a comfortable chair. Due to flooring throughout hotel, all sound seems to multiply. So bring your ear plugs! Staff are mostly very friendly and helpful. Breakfast and dinner in main restaurant were not spectacular. Lunch was better. The Point a la carte restaurant was a disappointment. Plus points? The view of Maho beach from the terrace and all the aircraft approaching and leaving the airport. That is quite spectacular! Not a bad way to enjoy a cocktail. You can see the resort in background of the photo I posted.
First of all this is definitely not a 5 star resort. I would give it 4 stars on a good day and if others were to advocate for 3.5 stars, I would not quibble with that. I will tell you about the things we liked and the things we didn't like to attempt to give you a complete picture. We chose this resort because we purchased a Groupon package. This is not an adults only resort but the ratio of adults to children was tilted heavily toward the adult range so having some children around was never an issue with us. This resort is in a pretty good location although the area immediately surrounding the resort is not that great....very limited shopping etc. We never tired of watching the planes land and it is a short walk from the resort to the beach area where you are in very close proximity to the planes landing. The check in process can be a frustrating experience and does not seem to be very efficient. We were told twice that our room was not ready and to come back in 30 minutes. When our room was still not ready after this I think it was apparent that my aggravation level was escalating and the receptionist said a manager would be out in 5 minutes to explain the delay?? About 10 minutes later the same woman told us they now had a different room they were going to give us. We had a very nice newly renovated room on the 9th floor with a great ocean view that also overlooked the pool. One problem that we did experience with our room was the water. There were numerous instances where the water simply stopped working and the toilet would not flush. I will let you decide how big of an issue this is.......hello?! Usually, if you waited 5 or 10 minutes the water would start again and the toilet would flush. We did see a posted notice that they were doing an upgrade of their water system one night but on another occasion a person at the front desk told me that they were repairing a broken pipe. All I know is that we experienced these water issues for almost the entire week that we were there.....didn't ruin our vacation but nonetheless annoying. Prior to our trip I had noticed quite a few reviews that mentioned the vibe they received from the resort employees....mostly unfavorable. I would say that there was about a 50/50 mix of friendly, helpful employees and those that could use a refresher course in good customer relations or at least an attitude adjustment.....the ratio that should be the target is at least 90/10 in my opinion (the HR department should take note!). I would start with the short bartender who wears glasses and is most often found working the pool bar. My wife saw a customer call him out once for his rude behavior and the way he ignores some customers but caters to others who no doubt have been kissing his *** and tipping him generously. I in fact did tip the bartenders that I liked and were friendly. One thing I will say is that they do not skimp on the drinks....many premium liquors/beers and well made drinks. The food at this resort is above average which I think is pretty good for an "AI" resort. The dinners we had at The Point and the Palms Grill were quite good and we also really liked the buffet lunch every day outside the Palms Grill. I am not a buffet guy by any means but the breakfast buffet at the Ocean Terrace was decent and the pizza there was also a good option but the pizza oven broke down about midway through our stay and was never fixed before we left which was a disappointment. One thing I highly recommend is that very soon after you check in you should get the restaurant brochure and make your reservations right away. Something I did not like at all was the way they stagger the times certain restaurants are open and some nights are closed completely which then corrals people into very limited options. As far as I am concerned if an "AI" resort has 4 restaurants then those restaurants should be open every night so you always have all the options available. We did not like the beach barbecue buffet which is the only option on Wednesday nights or the dinner buffet meal we had at the Ocean Terrace on another night because it was the only place open. I think this is why some people go off site for some of their meals. I have it on good authority that the food at nearby 3 Amigos is good and the lobster at The Refuge is excellent and quite reasonable. All in all this resort is a decent option especially if the price point is favorable to other places as it was for us.
We are not picky people. We take the good with the bad in stride. There are great things about this place and not so great. I agree with several other reviews - staff are nice at times but need training desperately on customer service. Need training on team work. We encountered some very hard workers and then others standing around talking when service was needed. I think the struggle is real when trying to maintain a higher end resort along with a decent one. The problem lies along the shared property. The plus side: Akylah - concierge. Wow - give her a raise. Make her management. She gets it. (Customer service). Positives continued - The view. The island. Being able to walk down to 2 off resort bars which are FUN. Plane watching. Pinel Islsnd. Mullet Bay - next door, swim out room, sunset bar view! The negative : staff that frown and act like they're doing you a favor, we also didn't find AZUL to be great - cold food, disappointing breakfast x 100, the staff always seemed unprepared for the "next shift" of people i.e. If you weren't there at the beginning then forget a mimosa right away or expect a lot of dirty dishes. I dislike being negative. Hopefully this will help management and training. We paid a similar price for a family of 6 to go to a Mexican All inclusive (4 stars) and liked it more so - without a swim out room! We loved St Martin but would not return here.
