PHILIPSBURG (Aug. 1, 2011) - The St. Maarten Tourist Bureau is teaming up with basketball stars Brendan Haywood of the Dallas Mavericks and Philadelphia 76er Elton Brand to host an NBA basketball clinic taking place Aug. 2, 2011 at 7:00 pm at the LB Scott Auditorium in Philipsburg. The athletes are currently in St. Maarten enjoying their family vacation and have agreed to set aside some time to work with children on the island.

The event is free of charge and offers children the opportunity to learn the skills of the sport and tricks of the trade from professional players. The clinic is also an active outlet for the youth that provides not only skill training but personal relationship building.

"We are proud to be working with such esteemed sports figures on this one-day clinic for the children of St. Maarten," said May-Ling Chun, Interim Director of Tourism for St. Maarten. "We also thank them for taking time out of their family vacation here on the island to work with us."

Prior to the event, there will be an open press conference starting at 6:30 pm at the LB Scott Auditorium.

A graduate of University of North Carolina, Haywood currently plays for the 2011 NBA Champions, Dallas Mavericks. Prior to joining the Mavericks he played for the Washington Wizards where he spent most of his career.

The number one pick in the 1999 NBA draft, Elton Brand was selected by the Chicago Bulls where he played for two years after which he was traded to the Los Angeles Clippers. He played with the Clippers for seven years before joining the Philadelphia 76ers in 2008.
